RIP Steve Irwin

I was somewhat shocked to see a headline this morning about the death of Steve Irwin, better known as the Crocodile Hunter. I say somewhat shocked because I have always thought that some of his antics with very dangerous animals looked like they were a little out of control. But having seen him wrestle with crocodiles and handle some of the most poisonous snakes in the world, I guess I began to feel like he was a little crazy but knew what he was doing. It's as if I thought of him as invincible. Sadly, he was not invincible. While filming an underwater segment for a new show over the weekend, he was stung in the heart by a stingray and died as a result of cardiac arrest. I feel saddest for his two very young children who will never really get to experience their father's love of animals. They will always have recordings of his programs, but it's just not the same. RIP Steve Irwin.

I was shocked as well. I've seen him handle too many irritated snakes and escape unscathed to have thought of him as mortal. While it is sad that his children will grow up without knowing him I suspect their mother will instill in them a love of the outdoors and animals. The story I read said she was off "trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania" at the time of the accident.

Shocked and saddened here as well - I actually saw the headline on the computer late last night. Of all the dangerous animals he has dealt with, I never thought it would be something like a stingray that would do him in. Just a tragic freak accident.

RIP Steve Irwin. You will be missed.
